Safety Protocols and Methods for Operating Bulldozers!
Mar. 15, 2022
Operating any type of heavy equipment can pose a safety hazard. It is important to always exercise caution and only operate heavy equipment after receiving proper training. Bulldozers are very powerful machines and incorrect or incorrect use can create dangerous situations.
Set the parking brake
Always use the parking brake on the dozer to ensure that the equipment does not move or roll without someone in control. This step is especially important if the machine is kept in neutral.
Taking the time to completely shut down the equipment when leaving the dozer cab will ensure that the machine is stable and will not move.
Operate with care
Try to keep the tracks straight up and down on slopes and be aware of the center of gravity of the equipment. Bulldozers are less safe when operated on frozen ground or loose rocks. Always wear a seat belt when operating a bulldozer or any other type of heavy equipment.
Always check blind spots
Before moving heavy equipment, be aware of your surroundings and always check blind spots. Use searchlights and take advantage of modern technology to achieve optimal visibility.
Personal Protective Equipment
Hard hats, safety shoes, hearing protection, safety clothing and reflective undershirts must be worn. Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE), even when sitting in the cab of the dozer.
Stay visible and remind others on site to use extra caution when working around heavy equipment.
Maintenance and Care
Like any vehicle or machinery, prevention is important. Check the dozer's tracks and take care of the undercarriage to ensure a long life for the machine. Make sure you perform daily cycle checks and take up-to-date photos of your equipment in case of accidents.
Do I need training
In the United States, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) does not provide certification for heavy equipment operation, but does require employers to provide training and instruction.
The most important thing to remember about the operation of any heavy equipment is that it should only be operated if such training is provided and it is safe to do so. Always request training before agreeing to operate a new machine. Put safety first and take training protocols seriously.
