Tips to Prevent Uneven Wear on Heavy Equipment
Sep. 22, 2021
The landing gear is one of the most important components of any heavy equipment. It is also usually the most costly to repair or replace. For example: although the landing gear accounts for approximately 20% of the upfront cost of the machine, it is usually responsible for 50% of the repair costs. This is why it is important to take measures to prevent damage to the landing gear, especially if it can be avoided. This includes uneven wear.
Although uneven wear is common, small changes in behaviour can go a long way towards preventing it. Furthermore, if caught early, uneven wear can even be corrected.
Let's take a look at some of the common causes of uneven wear and what steps operators can take to stop it happening.
Don'ts
When working on slopes or hills, don't operate the bulldozer in only one direction as this can add extra stress to the rollers, idlers and guide lugs. Instead, switch directions so that the downhill track does not wear out faster than the uphill track.
When moving up a hill, keep the machine running in a straight line and do not tilt it.
Do not turn in the same direction every time. This can also lead to uneven wear.
Do not make sharp turns. This can put pressure on the landing gear and thus shorten the life of the machine. Also, turn on level ground whenever possible. Keep turning on slopes to a minimum.
Do not exceed the speed limit, especially in reverse. Higher speeds can lead to accelerated wear and tear.
Dos
It is important to keep the landing gear of your machine free of any dirt and debris.
Do alternate your right and left turns. This will prevent asymmetric wear.
Always keep the landing gear clean and take the time to remove dirt and debris at the end of each working day. This is especially important in winter, when dirt and debris can freeze and cause the guides to loosen and the roller to seize up.
Choose the right track - different jobs require different tracks. If you are not sure what you need for your project, consult your local dealer or heavy equipment specialist before buying or hiring a machine.
Maintain roller frames, counterbalance bars and pivots - improper maintenance of these components can change alignment, which can lead to accelerated wear.
Carry out regular inspections of the machine - the inspector will measure chassis wear and advise on which parts need to be replaced and when. At Hebei XUANHUA, we offer this service for you.
